I received a letter from Sister Lizzie yesterday and was very glad to hear from home. I suppose you have heard of our last disaster in the valley. We lost all in trying too accomplish too much if Genl Early's orders had been carried out by Company Commanders the result I am sure would have been quite different, but instead of enforcing the order they acted to the contrary, and allowed their men to fall out of ranks to plunder the Yankee Camps. This Army is now undergoing the most rigid discipline, and this I hope will continue for several weeks. There is also entirely too much familiarity between the officers and men and unless this is stopped the men will never learn to obey their officers. I hope this thing will cease to exist. In the fight of 19th inst Maj Genl Ramsuer our old brigade Commander was mortally wounded and died the next day in the enemys hands. This makes two Division Commanders that we have lost since we have been in the Valley. Capt Beall who commanded our Regiment on the 19th inst was mortally wounded and left in the hands of the enemy. The Regt is commanded by Lt Hancock from NewBerne. I am acting adjt of the Regt, Adgt Dillingham being either killed or wounded or captured. I have a good deal of official business to attend to as all coming to the Regt have to pass through my hands. If I can not hear any thing from the Adjt I am going to appoint a Sergt Major and then I will not have so much to do. Pa please try and get me a boy to wash and cook for. Tip Cobb (WHH Cobb) has one but it occupies all his time to cook for us. Perhaps you can find one around Dudley Depot or Goldsboro, do not buy one for me. I hope the resolutions adopted by the Governors Convention lately held at Augusta Ga will be carried into effect. I must soon bring my letter to a close, as it is getting late and I have a good deal of writing to do. Pa please write soon. Best love to Ma and all.
