Brown & Michael W. Coffey Company A, 2nd Regiment NC Junior Reserves Captain David Edward McKinne - Born in Wayne County in March, 1847. Resided in Wayne County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Wayne County at age 17. Appointed or elected 2nd Lieutenant on April 12, 1864. Reported on a special requisition dated July 6, 1864, to be Acting Adjutant of the 1st Regiment NC Junior Reserves. However, that regiment had not been formed as of that date. In his history of this regiment, published in Clark's "Regiments", 4:26, he states that he was "assigned to duty as Adjutant of the post of Weldon" in August, 1864, and was ordered to serve as Acting Adjutant General for Maj. Walter Clark as the latter took "command of the scattered companies" in the sub- department in September, 1864. Reported present with this company on August 31, 1864. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on September 8, 1864. Signed muster roll for September-October, 1864, as commanding the company. Hospitalized at Goldsboro on January 1, 1865, with tonsilitis. Returned to duty on March 6, 1865. Although there are no surviving company records listing him as Captain, Confederate gravestone records indicate that he held the rank of Captain at his discharge, and he styled himself Captain in his history of the 2nd Regiment NC Junior Reserves in Clark's "Regiments." Was probably promoted to Captain subsequent to March 6, 1865.
