Wayne County, NC - Military Records - Pearsall, Wm E and George W File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Steve Pearsall - Pearscp@aol.com CSA - National Archives File - William Edward Pearsall enlisted 22 May 1861 as a Private in Capain Junius B Whitaker's Company (Goldsboro Volunteers) 9th Regiment, NC Volunteers. This Company was transferred to the 4th Regiment of NC State Troops on 28 Jun 1861. He was discharged from the Goldsboro Volunteers on 28 Jun 1861 and voluntarily enlisted at New Bern into the 4th Regiment the same date.His age is given as 19. On 27 Jul 1861 he was promoted to Fourth Corporal, Company D, 4th Regiment NC Infantry NC(State Troops). He was listed as sick on the Company Muster Roll. On 21 Oct 1861 he was promoted to First Corporal and was listed as sick. He appears as sick in General Hospital, Petersburg, Va, since 10 Dec 1861 on the Company Muster Roll for December 1861. On the Regimental Muster Roll of Jan 1862 and Feb 1862 he appears again with the notation sick in Petersburg since 10 Dec 1861. William appears on a report of Sick and Wounded in First NC Hospital at Petersburg, Va, for the month of Oct 1862. An enry reflects that he was discharged on 14 Oct 62 as a result of coxalgia. His Certificate of Disability for Discharge bears a date of 13 Oct 1862 and reflects he received his discharge because of: 'Interstitial absorpshion of the head and neck of the femur (malurn Coxao Senilao) which incapacitates him in a great degree from walking (not capable for duty in any of the Departments). William's discharge reflected he was born in Dupin Co, NC, is twenty one years of age; five feet, 10 inches high, light complexion, brown eyes, dark hair and by occupation when enlisted was a Trader. John D Pearsall, J P, administered the Oath of Allegiance to the Sate of North Carolina. George indicated he was born in Wayne Co, NC, and listed his occupation as farmer, height 5 feet, eight inches. George's name appears on the Register of General Hospital, admitted 16 Feb 1863 for fatigue. He was returned to duty 20 Feb 1863. He appears on a roll of Non-commissioned Officers and Privates employed on extra duty at Gordonsville, Va, during the month of August 1963. A receipt roll for pay 5 Aug 1863 at Staunton, Va, gives occupation as Teamster. His name appears on the register of Receiving and Wayside Hospital of General Hospital Number 9, Richmond, Va. Admitted 29 Nov 1863 sent to Camp Winder Hospital 30 Nov 1863. Receipt roll 3rd Division General Hospital for clothing Camp Winder, Richmond, Va, dated 7 Jan 1864. Receipt roll for clothing 1st quarter 1864 issued in Mar 1864. Receipt roll for clothing, dated 20 Apr 1864. George Whitfield Pearsall was killed at the battle of Cold Harbor in Hanover County, Va, on 2 Jun 1864. His name appears on a Register of Claims of Deceased Officer and Soldiers from NC which were filed for settlement in the Office of the Confederate States Auditor for the War Department. On 3 Nov 1864, his widow, Sarah Pearsall filed a claim for settlement. This company was transferred to the 4th Regiment of the NC State Troops on 28 Jun 1861. He was discharged from the Goldsboro Volunteers on 28 Jun 1861 and voluntarily enlisted at New Bern into the 4th Regiment the same date. On 20 Oct 1861, he wa promoted to Fourth Corporal. He appears on the register of the General Hospital, Orange Court House, Va, as being admitted 1 Apr 1862. On 10 May 1862, he was admitted to Chmiborazo Hospital #3, Richmond, Va Disease - typhoid. He was returned to duty on 17 Jun 1862. On 31 Jul 1862 there is a voucher indicating he was paid a bounty of fifty dollars at Goldsboro, and was paid as a Corporal the sume of $91.00. A voucher dated 17 Apr 1863 indicate he is due $49.50 for commulation of rations while at home on sick furlough from 11 Jun 1862 to 11 Dec 1862, being one hundred and fifty days. He acknowledged receipt of this money at a Camp near Grace Church on 1 Jun 1863. On 3 Nov 1863 he received payment at Goldsboro, NC, 6 months pay, $102.00. Rank indicated as Sergeant. On 30 Aug 1864, he received payment for 2 months amounting to $39.13. On 21 May 1864 his rank is indicated as Sergeant on a Register of General Hospital #9, Richmond, Va On 22 May 1864, he was sent to General Hospial, Camp Winder, Richmond, Va, where on 10 Oct 1864 he appeared on the receipt roll for an issue of clothing. He received additionll clothing on 24 Oct 1864 and 4 Nov 1864. His name continues to appear on the Hospital Muster Rolls until 25 Feb 1865 when he was admitted to Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Va. He last appears on a list of Prisoners of War belonging to the 9th and 10th Divisions of Jackson Hospital with the remarks, captured 3 Apr 1865, paroled 18 Apr 1865.
