North Carolina Confederate Chaplains "Our Heritage" By Claude Moore July 31, 1992 Last week I wrote about the N.C. chaplains in the service of the Confederacy & I had gotten to the Nineteenth Regiment which was served by chaplains of other regiments. The chaplain of the Thirteenth Regiment was the Rev. A. D. Betts of Bethel, N.C. The chaplin of the Twentieth N.C. Regiment was the Rev. James M. Sprunt, D.D. (1818-1884) a Presbyterian minister, native of Scotland, long-time pastor of the Grove Presbyterian Church in Kenansville & the Faison Presbyterian Church, Faison & president of James Sprunt Institute, Kenansville. Another chaplain of this regiment was the Rev. L. A. Bikle, D.D., Lutheran of Cabarrus County. The Rev. J. P. Moore, Methodist of Person County & the Rev. J. J. Hines of Pollocksville, N.C. were chaplains of the Twenty-First N.C. Regiment. The Rev. A. B. Cox of Alleghany County & the Rev. Frank H. Wood, D.D., Methodist were chaplains of the Twenty-Second Regiment. The Rev. W. H. Moore, D.D., Methodist of Pittsboro also served the Twenty- Second. The chaplains of the Twenty-Fourth Regiment were the Rev. Evander McNair, D.D. of Robeson County & the Rev. __ served the Twenty-Seventh Regiment. The Twenty-Fifth Regiment was served by chaplains of other regiments. The Rev. R. H. Marsh, D.D., Baptist of Chatham County & the Rev. A. N. Wells, Methodist of Gaston County were the chaplains of the Twenty-Sixth Regiment. The Rev. Oscar J. Brent, Methodist of Wadesboro, N.C., the Rev. F. Milton Kenneday, D.D., Methodist of South Carolina & the Rev. D. S. Henkel served the Twenty-Eight Regiment. The Rev. E. C. Wexler of the Holston Conference & the Rev. S. M. Collis, a Baptist, served the Twenty-Ninth Regiment. There is no record relating to the chaplaincy of the Thirty-First Regiment. The chaplains of the Thirty-Second Regiment were the Rev. Joseph W. Murphy, D.D., Episcopal and native of Ireland; the Rev. W. B. Richardson, Methodist & the Rev. John C. Tenney. The Thirty-Third Regiment was served by the Rev. T. J. Eatman, Baptist of Wilson County. The Thirty-Fourth Regiment was served by the Rev. A. R. Bennick, Methodist of South Carolia. The chaplain of the Thirty-Sixth Regiment was the Rev. Luther McKinnon, D.D., (1840-1916), Presbyterian of Richmond County. He served as chaplain from 1863 to 1865. The Rev. David Fairly, Presbyterian of Manchester, N.C., __ After the War, he served churches in Goldsboro, Concord, Lumberton & Columbia, S.C. & for nearly two years he was president of Floral College (Flora McDonald) & for three years he was president of Davidson College. Dr. McKinnon married Miss Addie Lee, daughter of Dr. & Mrs. A. M. Lee (C.S.A., surgeon) of Clinton.
