Wayne County, NC - Langston-Bennet, Petition - Revolutionary Service ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Delamar Extracts, Pgs 1-200 Legislative Papers Relating to Revolutionary Service NC Archives The Committee to whom was referred the petition of Ann Langston and Sarah Bennet report that although your Committee are desirous of granting an allowance to the petitioners, in consequence of their present distressing situation and the meritorious services of their deceased husbands, yet conceive a certificate of the Clerk of Wayne County Court, shewing that no compensation has previously been made by said Court, to be absolutely necessary to enable the Committee to grant their request, therefore recommend that said petition be at present rejected. In the House, Dec 30, and in the Senate Dec 31, 1793, read and concurred with. Ann Langston, widow of John, and Sarah Bennett, widow of Nehemiah, soldiers in the Militia Service in the late war. Petition humbly sheweth that your petitioners husbands were both taken prisoners by the British in an action on the 17th of Augt 1781 and held in confinement until they both died, each leaving a family of, (one seven & the other eight children) without any property for their support. Sometime about a year past your petitioners made application to the County Court of Wayne for an allowance under act of Assembly passed in 1784. The said court made an allowance of ten pounds each a year for the time to come, but did not make an allowance for the time past, which hath been the time of the greatest distress to your petitioners & their children. In the Senate December 24, and in the House December 27, 1793, read and referred to Committee. In Senate 10 January 1794. Resolved that the Public Treasurer be directed to pay unto (torn) Langston and Sarah Bennett widows of John Langston and Nehemiah Bennett Militia Soldiers who died in the service of this State, the sum of Forty pounds each at four pounds per year from the year 1782 to the first of the year 1793. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
