Shepard's Company, Colonel Abraham Shepard's 10” North Carolina Regiment, marched to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, was in winter quarters there, and was there placed in Captain John Inglals' company, Colonel John Patten's 2" North Carolina Regiment. He was in the battle of Monmouth, was stationed the following winter at Paramus to guard the lines, the next spring helped to build fortifications at Stony Point on the Hudson, then marched to Charleston, South Carolina, was in the siege there, where taken prisoner and held about fourteen months, when exchanged July 2, 1781, and soon after was discharged. He was allowed pension on his application executed October 1, 1832, at which time he was a resident of Wayne County, North Carolina, and was aged seventy-three years. The soldier died February 23, 1840, survived by children whose names are not stated, and there is no reference to his wife. Very truly yours A. D.
