Wayne County, NC - John Humphrey Revolutionary War Record, 1818 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wayne County Miscellaneous Records 1788-1936 CR 103.928 State of North Carolina } Court of Pleas & quarter Wayne County } Sessions May Term 1818 John Humphrey of the state and county aforesaid personally appeared in open court and made oath on the Holy Evangelist of almighty God that in the spring of the year 1777, he inlisted as a private soldier for three years in the Revolutionary Army under Capt. Jacob Valentine of Virginia and that he served out the term for which he inlisted and a short time before the expiration of said term he re-enlisted during the war under Capt. John Nichols and was shortly afterwards taken prisoner by the enemy in the Battle of Guilford Court House in the state aforesaid and was carried by them to Charleston South Carolina which deprived him of the opportunity of obtaining a discharge for his three years service - and that after being kept some months at Charleston as a prisoner he the deponent seeing no hope of being released, was induced to inlist in the British Army in order to afford him an opportunity of making his escape which he verry soon effected (without ever having engaged in any acts of hostility against his own government) about which time peace was concluded which deprived him of an opportunity of re-joining the American Army which he intended to have done - the deponent further swears that he is verry poor and has a large family to support, and is afflicted with fits and that he needs the aid of the Government Sworne to and subscribed P.
