He was a British soldier under Gen. Cornwallis, but somewhere between Wilmington and Halifax, N.C., he deserted and joined the American forces. He fought under Col. Lytes Peyton on the South Carolina Line for one year. He served under General Greene and under Capts. Raiforce and Hale. He married on Feb. 10, 1786 in Wayne County, Zilpha Temple (b. 23 Nov. 1787.) Their son, Reuben, was born in April of the following year. In 1821, they had two daughters aged 30 and 14. He applied for and was granted pension from Johnston County, where he died in November 1842.
