Collectors of War Tax

President Davis has appointed the following persons Collectors of the war tax in 
the States named: 

Alabama, Joseph C. Bradley
Arkansas, William H. Hallibut
Florida, E. Z. Blackburn
Georgia, E. Starnes
Louisiana, R. A. Lansher
Mississippi, J. A. Handy
South Carolina, G. E. Martin
Tennessee, Isaac B. Williams
Texas, G. K. Gurham
Virginia, H. T. Garnett
North Carolina, William K. Lane

Each State constitutes a tax division with one chief collector as above who is 
charged with the duty of dividing the State into a convenient number of 
collection districts, subject to the revisal of the Secretary of the Treasury. 
The chief collector will also appoint a tax collector for each district whose 
duty it shall be to cause an assessment of all property in his district to be 
made and shall appoint assessors for this purpose. 

The postoffice of the chief collector for this state, William K. Lane, Esq., is 
Goldsboro, Wayne County. Persons who may wish to be appointed deputy collectors 
will apply to him. We presume Mr. Lane will proceed at as early a period as 
practicable to divide the State into a convenient number of districts.

W. K. Lane, Esq. We learn from a friend that William K. Lane, Esq., of Wayne had 
announced himself a candidate for Congress before he was informed of his 
appointment as Tax Collector for this State; and that finding the two positions 
incompatible he at once determined not to continue in the field for Congress. We 
make this statement of our own accord in justice to Mr. Lane. That gentleman has 
accepted the office of Chief Collector for the State and has entered vigorously 
on the discharge of his responsible duties.
