Gurley of Goldsboro entertained about 125 of their friends and relatives at a barbecue dinner served out at their farm near Rosewood last Sunday, August 11th. The premises were carefully prepared by their tenants, John Summerlin and Gertrude Summerlin. The barbecue was prepared by Joe Daniels of Goldsboro. 125 plates were served and other eats, such as cakes and pies, in proportion. After everything was made ready Mr. Gurley offered a short talk expressing his appreciation for their presence, and his purpose of the affair was to create a better spiritual and social feeling of the family. In conclusion he invited them to be present a year hence. He was then followed by Mr. D. B. Sasser returning thanks in a very able and spiritual manner. In the early afternoon the crowd was entertained by H. L. Sullivan and family's string band, of Mt. Olive, who played a few religious hymns and old love songs, which seemed to be much enjoyed by those present. At 4:30 they were entertained by a ball game on their home park, managed by Clifton and Robert Gurley, known as "Goldsboro Ramblers," visiting team being Belfast, score being 2 to 1 in favor of the visiting team. Mr. Gurley's mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Cicero Gurley, were present and Mr. Gurley seemed to enjoy the game very much, had not seen a game for many years. He said when he was a boy they used to make lots of runs, he had made a home run on many a ball and could have made two if necessary. Some of the out-of-town visitors were: Mr. W. H. Pierce and wife, Mrs. Fletcher Hill and son, and Mr. J. F. Crumpler of Kenly; Mr. D. B. Sasser and wife of Wilson; Prof. Marvin Ingram, Cornell, New York; Harry Shumate and family of Goldsboro and Gurney Jinnette, Goldsboro. The Goldsboro Ramblers, consisting of Goldsboro boys, and some of their parents were present; Mr. Charlie Waters and wife, and Mr. Wynn, father of two star players. Mr. and Mrs. Gurley propose to continue this annually as long as health and progress permits.
