Wilmington Observer November 17, 1874
Our former countyman, Capt. H. J. Carraway who resides at Halifax in this state 
on a recent visit to New York attended Dr. Deems' church of the Strangers and 
there received a family bible the property of Mrs. Wm. Carraway of Wayne county 
which had been captured by one of Sherman's bummers in 1865. The Bible had a few 
days before been sent to Rev. Dr. Deems by a lady who had taken it from an ex-
federal soldier. Among the family record in the book the birth, name and baptism 
of "Chas. Deems Carraway" had been recorded in the Doctor's own handwriting and 
it was this that led to the recovery. Capt. Carraway brought the Bible home with 
him and Mrs. William Carraway and family will doubtless be glad at again being 
placed in possession of it.
