Medical authorities estimate that Col. and Mrs. Edward Ward, early settlers in Onslow County, have at least 5,000 descendants today, among them D. L. Ward of New Bern and his sister, Mrs. Byron Donaldson, of Goldsboro. Here is the inscription from the gravestone at the grave of Col. Ward, placed first at the Ward family burying ground near Brown's Inlet, Onslow County, but now removed to a place near the Camp Lejeuene entrance: "Here lyeth the Body of Colonel Edward Ward. Esqr. Born March 22nd 1694 & died Sept. 18th 1766 Age 72 years, 5 months and 15 days. He was one of ye first settlers & was wounded in ye first of ye Indian wars. Yet he lived to have by his only wife, Elizabeth, 15 children, which 15 has already produced for him 86 grandchildren & 14 Great Grand Children, in all 115. Cruel Relentless death has laid his head low in the Gloomy Mansions of the Dead, Where lie the Equally Mouldering in the Silent Grave. Still tho his Earthly Part in dust is laid, we hope his dearest soul to Heaven has fled".
