His force as first noticed at Kinston was at least 15,000, being five to one to Gen. Evans'. Out killed and wounded was small, the enemy's heavy. He took about 400 prisoners of our force, drove us beyond Kinston, entered the town and pillaged it, and on retiring burnt the railroad bridge, to prevent pursuit by our increasing forces, At Whitehall the enemy suffered severly. We are assured that the enemy were reinforced every day from Newbern, until his number, as estimated by some, increased to 70,000 men. He advanced to the Rail Road, protected by the river, tore up the Road and burnt bridges, &c, and immediately retreated back to Newbern. It is understood that the damage to the Road can be repaired in a few days. The reported burning of Everittsville and private dwellings by the enemy, is untrue. A gentleman informs us that he witnessed the retreat on Friday last near Kinston. The wagon train was upwards of 9 miles in length, and the army was passing the entire day, in a close column, and at a quick pace. His whole demeanor indicates as much fright as if we had had 100,000 men ready to pounce upon him.
