Jno. N. Andrews At the Laying of the Corner Stone of Goldsboro M. E. Church South July 12th, 1883 W. K. Lane, by education and association, was bitterly opposed to the Methodists; a man of prominence in the county; chairman of the court, having larger business relations with people than any other man in the county; a gentleman of high character. He determined not to yield to the fanaticism which was running his neighborhood. For several days he kept aloof from the meeting, and finally his spirit of opposition rose to the pitch of showing his contempt for the whole meeting, (as he stated to me) so he decided to do the most unreasonable thing which he could have done; collecting some fishing tackle he proceeded, out of his way, in sight of the church, where his fellow citizens might see him, to the river fishing. But when seated on the bank of the Neuse he could hear in the distance the songs in in the sanctuary, and it made him unhappy. The fish would not bit, but the mosquitoes did, and within his breast was an accusing conscience. He returned home wretched, and the next day, to the astonishment of all, was at the church a broken hearted penitent. As in all great revivals other denominations shared in the fruits. Jno. Everitt, Willis Hall and Samuel Smith, with their families, joined the Presbyterianism in Wayne County. Jno. Everitt and Willis Hall built the Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro. Everitt, Smith and others built the Presbyterian Church in Everittsville, which was burned by Sherman's army. Jno. C. Slocumb, David B. Everitt, Jno. Wright, D. B. McKinne and Wm. Hollowell built the Methodist Church in Everittsville. John Everitt, Samuel Smith and others built the Presbyterian Church in Everittsville which was burned by Sherman's army. Jas. F. Kornegay and Wm. Carraway built the Methodist Church at Indian Springs. Richard Washington, Geo. W. Collier, Dr. Daniel Cogdell and other built the Episcopal Church in Goldsboro.
