E. Becton, Disark, Ark., to his uncle Col. I. T. Kennedy informing him of the death of his father, John E. Becton on the 23d of Feb. was received last week. He was a highly respected citizen of this county until after the late war when he removed to the West to be near his children who had preceded him. He was over 85 years old and was living with his son William temporarily and was enjoying as good health as usual for one of his age. He ate a harty dinner and was taken with excruciating pain in the breast soon after and died before medical aid could be procured. He has many relatives in Jones, Lenoir and in this county who will mourn his death. He was buried in Disark, and the services were conducted by White River Lodge No. 37, F. & A. M. He was a good farmer and mechanic of highest order in his palmy days. The Court House and jail of Goldsboro are his work. He was an active member of the Presbyterian church at his death.
