Solomon Emmanuel, widely known local Negro, died at the County Home at noon Friday. He was 82. Removed from the bare floor of his Spruce street shanty by Welfare Supertintendent J. A. Best on Wednesday, Emmanuel died of "old age". Called to the shanty after neighbors had reported "something wrong" when they continued to hear the howls of three dogs in the old frame house, Superintendent Best investigated and found the venerable Negro lying on the floor, his wife near him. The aged couple were lying on a pile of ragged quilts. Both were removed to the County Home. The woman will remain there. The welfare head said he found "three dogs all chained in the weather beaten house". The animals were freed. "Big Foot" was familiarly known to many Goldsboro folk as a handy man and the largest member of his race in the city. Six feet, four inches tall, Solomon wore a size 14 shoe and "Ah always had to cut 'em so my feet could have room" he said often. A giant of a man, "Big Foot" weighed nearly 300 pounds at his death. Born in Grantham June 10th, 1858, the Negro was best known for his description of the Battle of Bentonville in 1863. Said Solomon: "Ah heered the muskeets apoppin' and thought it was the reed marsh abudin'."
