All Goldsboro was made sad last night, when the news came over the wires from Philadelphia that Mrs. H. L. Grant died at a hospital in that city where she had gone for treatment. Many years ago, she left her home in far away Connecticut a bride, and came with her husband, Maj. H. L. Grant, to make her home among a new people in this Southland. From the day she came among us to the day of her death, Mrs. Grant was a blessing to the people not only of the city of Goldsboro, but of the county as well. Her husband had already established his home in Goldsboro before he went to bring his bride from her Northern home, and as soon as Mrs. Grant came to Goldsboro, Goldsboro became her home and the Goldsboro people became her people. Immediately after coming to Goldsboro, in her quiet, modest, womanly way she became deeply interested in the work of the First Baptist Church, and deeply interested in ministering to the necessities and the comfort of the poor of the community, and it was largely through her instrumentality that the society for systematically looking after the poor was organized, and the organization of this Benevolent Society was the beginning of the great work which culminated in the erection and establishment of Goldsboro's splendid hospital. As we sit today with sorrowing hearts, at the loss the community has sustained in the death of this good woman, we feel that if we were an artist, we would like to paint the picture of a beautiful young bride, leaning on the strong arm of her husband, saying good-bye to her old home among the hills of New England and turning her face towards the sunshine of the far away South, coming to a new home, among new people in the old North State, at once becoming thoroughly interested in everything that pertained to the welfare of the community, a faithful, loving wife, an ideal mother, performing the highest mission of womanhood, the rearing of sons and daughters, themselves a blessing in each community in which they live, and gently and sweetly, year by year growing old with the same old time yearning, tender, loving sympathy for the poor, needy, and distressed, with sweet smile and gentle voice ever ready to speak words of encouragement to the despondent and downhearted and with wide open hands to everyone who needed her assistance. Nature had wonderfully endowed Mrs. Grant with many talents, and she used every one of those talents for the good of the Master by service to His children. Hers was a great life, because she was an ideal woman. Such a life as this knows no fear in the days of health and strength, and such a life as this knows no fear when the full realization comes that soon all earthly ties shall be broken, that soon one must sweep out on the great unknown, alone, all alone, and yet not alone, for the Omnipotent One was at the bed-side when the spirit returned to God who gave it, and ministering angels went with her all the way to another new home, a home where sickness, and suffering, and sorrow never come, a home with God. Mrs. Grant is survived by five children, Rev. J. Hiram Grant, one of the most prominent ministers in the Congregational Church of New England, Mr. L. N. Grant of this city, and three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Grant Bowles, and Mrs. Minnie Grant Wilkins, of Statesville, and Mrs. Emma Grant Gay, of Worcester, Mass. Mrs. Grant was sixty-eight years of age. To her husband and children our whole people tender their deepest sympathy. The people of Goldsboro loved Mrs. Grant, and by them her death is a general personal sorrow. The funeral will be held from the First Baptist Church tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon at 4 o'clock.
