Wayne County, NC – Fatal Accident - Mr. Collier Griswold

On Friday Last, Mr. Collier Griswold, an esteemed citizen of Goldsboro
and an engineer in the employ of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad,
was the victim of a dreadful accident, which terminated in his death.
Mr. Griswold was an engineer and conductor of a freight train, and upon
arrival of his train at Joyners, while shifting some cars, he was 
caught between two of them and so badly crushed that he died in a few 
hours.

An upright and honorable gentleman, possessing a warm, kind heart and a 
genial disposition, he was universally beloved by all who knew him, and 
his loss will be deeply felt in every community where he was known. Mr. 
G. was in the employ of the Wilmington and Weldon railroad for a number 
of years and possessed the entire confidence of the officials of the 
road, while at the same time won, by his urbanity and pleasing 
disposition, the love and esteem of all the employes of the road.

During the war Mr. G. was chief engineer of the Confederate blockade 
runner Advance, and was captured when the steamer was endeavoring to 
enter a Confederate port, and carried to prison. He was soon afterwards 
released, when he returned to the Wilmington and Weldon railroad, where 
he remained up to the time of his death. 

He leaves an ___ family and a large circle of relatives and friends to 
mourn his loss.

Mr. Griswold was interred in this place on Sabbath last, a large 
concourse of sympathizing friends following his remains to the funeral, 
which greatly swelled in the numbers of the procession, which was 
estimated to contain about five hundred persons.

Mr. Griswold has passed away, but his many virtues will be remembered 
long after his body has mouldered into dust.
