Th 8/17/1916 _____ James Madison Jackson, Aged Confederate, Answers Final Summons Mr. James Madison Jackson, aged about 95 years, died at the county home where he had been an inmate for several months, Tuesday morning at 4 o'clock. Deceased was one of the oldest Confederate veterans in the county and served all through the Civil War. It is said that he was wounded during the war and his captain tried to get him to go home, but he refused, declaring that he would fight for his country till he died. Those who knew something of his army life say he was one of the bravest Southern soldiers who entered the conflict. "Uncle" James was well-known throughout Robeson, having lived in many sections of the county. He was born at Goldsboro, but came to Robeson county immediately after the close of the war. He did not have any relatives in this section of the country.
