Jones Had Reached Ripe Age of Ninety-Five Years Wilmington, May 1- Wilmington's oldest and one of her most beloved and highly appreciated citizens, Mr. Richard J. Jones, peacefully entered into rest yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph Price, No. 101 North Seventh Street. He was 95 years old on his last birthday, February 5, and for 62 years had served honorably and well in the office of Grand Treasurer of the North Carolina Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows and for 50 years acted as secretary and treasurer of Oakdale cemetery. Lacking but one year of a half century he was treasurer of the Tidewater Power Company. Until three weekds ago he had attended his offices regularly, walking to and fro twice a day from his home. While the end was not expected, yet it came as a great shock to all his immediate family and to a host of friends in this city and throughout the State. Mr. Jones was born at Myrtle Grove Sound, February 5, 1822, and moved to Wilmington when he was nine years of age. His father died soon after moving to Wilmington and since almost continually he had resided in the city. He has held practically every position that the city has had to offer, the last position being that of Chairman of the Board of Audit and Finance. Mr. Jones was active in business almost up to the time of his death. He possessed a clear memory and was often called on to settle disputes in regard to occurrences that happened years back in the early history of the city. He lived to see Wilmington grow from a town of a few hundred people to its present population of 30,000. His wife, who was Mrs Anna Liza Harverston, died 18 years ago. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. Jos. Price and Mrs. J. W. Lamb, of this city and four grandchildren, Mrs. S. E. Wood, of Wilmington, Mrs. J. C. King, of Charleston, S. C. , Mr. Thomas J. Gause and J. F. Gause, Jr. all of whom will have the tender sympathy of a host of friends throughout the State.
