Norris and One of Wayne's Oldest Veterans Timothy J. Norris, 96, one of the oldest Confederate veterans of the section, died at his home 619 North John Street late Friday. Death was incident to ailments of old age. Funeral services will be held from the home Sunday afternoon and burial will be made in the family plot at Pine Level, Johnston county. Surviving are five children, 19 grandchildren and a number of great- grandchildren. The children: Captain Dan Norris of the Goldsboro police force, P. R. Norris of Goldsboro, J. L. Norris and Mrs. R. D. Griffin of Durham and Mrs. Florence Kennedy of Rockingham. Adventurer, warrior, and student of the Bible, Mr. Norris was hale and hearty until a few weeks before his death. As late as last winter he had engaged in his job of filing saws, a tast that can be accomplished only by those of steady hand and clear eye. When he wasn't working, the veteran was reading his Bible-and he said that he had read it 30 times-or talking about the good old days. Born on a ship of Scotch parents who were imigrating to America, as a young man he pioneered in the Middle West and friends understood that he had participated in a number of Indian battles. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the Confederate army and served for four years. The greater part of his life spent in Johnston and Wayne counties. As a young man he traveled to Europe, visiting the birthplace of his parents. Tall, erect, and of large frame, Mr. Norris was a favorite of the children, giving love for love, and delighting them with stories of battles, travel, or the "good old days."
