C. Exum, in Nahunta township, was bought to this city by Sheriff Scott Saturday night and jailed on the charge of murdering his wife Friday night about 9:30 o'clock, having shot her through the right lung with No. 8 bird shot and blowing the right hand off while in a drunken frenzy upon his return from Wilson that night. The couple had frequent quarrels, and when his wife refused to give him $50 which he gave her some time ago he began slashing her with a knife and then brought his gun into action. The only witness to the tradegy was their 6 year old daughter, whom he afterwhile carried to a neighbor's house. The woman's dead body was found by neighbors the next morning about 10 o'clock lying across the bed. The murderer was soon apprehended in a canal with his gun and blood on his hands. Pritchard is a native of Guilford county and about 55 years old. He has been married twice and has two children by his first wife, which his relatives are taking care of, his last wife being 33 years old. Additional Comments: Bettie Howell, daughter of Cullen and Winnie Sauls Howell, was born about 1869 in Greene County and died Sept. 19, 1902. James Webb Pritchard, was born March 18, 1853 in Guilford County and died April 6, 1937 in Alamance County. Their daughter was Rachel Pritchard Sutton. James Pritchard had two children by his first marriage to Florence Allen, Charlie Jackson Pritchett and Rosa Pritchett Shaw. They spelled the last name differently. James Pritchard also married for a third time to Emma Simpson Wyatt, widow of James Wyatt.
