E. Church South, in reference to the death of Brother John C. Slocumb. A prince in Israel has fallen. We mourn the death of a brother, honored and beloved, whose devotion to God and His Church, whose strong and unswerving faith in His word and Providence, whose spotless character and peaceful death attest the sanctifying and saving power of the gospel, and bequeath to the Church of which he was for more than forty years a "burning and shining light," a legacy which we gratefully cherish and an example worthy of our imitation; and Whereas it has pleased the Divine Ruler of the Universe to remove from our midst, from our official board and from the Church militant to the Church triumphant, our well beloved brother, John C. Slocumb, therefore, Resolved, That by the death of Bro. Slocumb, this official body and the Methodist Church at Goldsboro have lost one of it oldest, most zealous and pious members, that we as a body deeply deplore this sad dispensation of Providence, feeling that his place can never be filled, that we cherish for him in death, so we did in life, the fond memory of a well beloved friend and brother, humbly praying that the God of our Israel may raise up an Elisha to wear the mantle of our ascended Elijah. Resolved, That we tender the bereaved family our heart felt sympathies in their great loss, praying that his strong faith and pure life, his fervent zeal and distinguished piety may stimulate them and us to greater usefulness and that the recollection of his oft radiant face and exultant shout of praise in the sanctuary may be indelibly impressed upon their hearts and ours, and bid them and us follow him as he followed Christ and that in the end they may be a family unbroken in "that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." Resolved, That a copy of this preamble and these resolutions be furnished the Raleigh Christian Advocate and the Methodist Advance for publication, that they form a part of the minutes of the Quarterly Conference, and that a copy be suitably engrossed and furnished the stricken family.
