Goldsboro Messenger 26 Mar 1885
At her home in Wayne County, NC on the 10th inst., in the 45th year of her age, 
of pneumonia, Mrs. Mary J. Stevens, wife of Mr. N. B. Stevens and daughter of 
John and Sally Kennedy.

The deceased was a devoted member of the M. E. Church South and by her death the 
Church and community sustain a great loss. Her motto in life was "Holiness to 
the Lord." The greatest object of her life work the salvation of souls. She was 
instant in season and out of season, earnest in prayer, diligent in business, 
fervent in spirit serving the Lord. A lady of untiring energy and zeal, an 
inestimable and devoted wife, an exemplary and fond mother. Truly it may be said 
of her "she hath done what she could," and doubtless had an abundant entrance 
into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
