Wayne County, NC - Obituary of Allen Whitfield, 1845 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Died, at his residence in Wayne County, NC on the evening of the 17th Inst., of Billious Congestive Typoid fever in the 55th year of his age, Mr. Allen Whitfield. The deceased was in attendance to his usual vocations on Saturday, scarcely under any complaint when on that evening he had a chill, and upon the subsidence of the consequent fever, his system sank into the typhoid stage with violent symptoms of billiary congestion which running its course rapidly, though he was aided by all that medical science and solicitous attention could bestow, terminated in final dissolution in the short space of 25 hours. His nearest neighbors and relations knew not a word of his illness till but a few hours previous to his death the suddenness of which tended much to heighten the blow of affliction and heart-felt sorrow at his loss. The deceased was a consistent member of the Baptist church, having embraced christianity in the year of 1814, and in his last moments manifested the triump of christian principles. He was kind and affectionate in his disposition, warm and generous in his feelings and so courteous and correct in his deportment as to command the respect of all who formed his acquaintance. He has left an amiable wife, seven fond children, an aged father, and several relations and friends to lament his untimely death. They have, however, to mitigate their berevement, by the cheering assurance that their "loss will be his eternal gain." "Thou art gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee, Though darkness and sorrow encompass the tomb. The Savior has passed through its portals before thee, And the lamb of his love, was thy guide through the gloom."
