William Hooks known as Col. William Robert Hooks, b. 25 Sep 1812, d. 18 Jun 
1888 married Penniah Dew (Hooks), b. 17 Feb 1825, d. 16 Jul 1865 is my Great 
Grandfather. These dates are correct as stated in the above "Gravestone 
Inscriptions."

Their fifth child, a daughter, Martha Hooks (Copeland), b. 25 Aug 1847, d. 3 
June 1926 married Green Copeland (1847-1919). He was a young private with 
Company E of the 11th Battalion of the North Carolina Cavalry. They are my 
Grandparents and had a farm on Memorial Church Road. They had 14 children.

The tenth child was a daughter named Nancy Luvenia Copeland (Watkins), b. 31 
Aug 1886, d. 21 Feb 1939 and she married my father Oliver Augustus Watkins, b. 
24 Aug 1886, d. 15 Jan 1962. They are buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in 
Montgomery County, Maryland. Both parents were deaf. She atteneded the NC 
School for the Deaf and he attended the Maryland School for the deaf. 

I was their third child, Melvin Copeland Watkins, b. 23 May 1925 in Baltimore 
City. They were married at the Green Copeland home place which I believe is on 
the Memorial Church Road. Near by was, or is, a church that we would attend 
one Sunday a month. They had visiting preachers, preach. The men would sit on 
one side of the church and the women and children would sit on the other side. 
They had a pot belly stove up near the alter with a flue hanging from the 
ceiling that ran down over the center aisle. My Mother, brother and I would go 
to NC every summer when school let out and return back to Baltimore for the 
start of school.
