This tribute to the death of Maria Jane Hurd was found in the family bible of 
Newman and Mary Abstella Fields Potts, Wayne County, NC. No known relation to 
this Potts family.

Died Springfield Mass. March 12th 1849 aged 12 Years

MY RESOLUCTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR *
January 1st 1848

1st  Try to keep the Sabbath Day holy.
2d   To be lovely, meek, and gentle.
3rd  To be a lamb of God and love him.
4th  To try and read my Bible every night and morning and not neglect my
     prayers.
5th  Try to be a friend to my associates.
6th  To be always ready to give up to any body [when it is not wrong to do so].
7th  To remember that the eye of God is upon us in all that we do.
