Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad

Know all men by these presents that we the subscribers Residents of the County of 
Wayne and Lenoir and State of North Carolina for and in consideration of one 
dollar paid to each of us by the President and Directors of the Wilmington & 
Raleigh company and in the further consideration of the advantages of a rail road 
passing through our lands do hereby consent to grant sell & convey to the said 
Wilmington and Raleigh rail road company such portion of said lands as may be 
necessary for a Rail road which the said company have in contemplation to 
construct agreeably to their charter in such directors as their engineer may 
think proper to run and lay off. In Witness whereof we have hereunto set our 
hands and seals the 25th of March 1836.

Wayne County Feby Term 1838
Then was the above Release to the President and Directors of the Wilmington and 
Raleigh Rail Road company from Wm. THOMSON, Jno. EVERETT, Hiram W. HUSTED & Wm. 
CARRAWAY duly proved in open court by the oath of the subscribing witnesses and 
duly acknowledged by Willis HALL and H.W. HUSTED & ordered to be Registered.

Chartered in 1834, the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad began operations in 1840 
between Wilmington, North Carolina and Weldon, NC. With 161.5 miles of track, it 
is said to have been the longest railroad in the world at the time of its 
completion. The name was changed in 1855 to the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad.
