"You see I got on an inside track with Uncle Sam, who made me assistant pay-master 
in the Cuban War. I carried around considerable money, and you bet I wasn't 
working for fun. I had been going to one of the Southern colleges, but I wanted to 
get up here where I could spend my money faster. Don't say a word about it, but I 
knew Smith was only seven miles away."

Stephen H. Grant: This week I obtained (from the Amherst College archives in MA) a 
neat photo of Major Hiram Grant’s fifth and last child with Lizzie Green Grant: 
Louis Newton Grant (1878 – 1963).
