Mr. Louis N. Grant, of This City to Wed One of the Most Popular Belles of New 
York Younger Social Set

Special to The Argus

New York, Sept. 18 - Announcement was formally made yestereday by Mr. and Mrs. 
John D. Barrett, of 24 West Seventy-first street, this city, and at their summer 
home, "Belhaven" Greenwich, Conn., of the engagement of their daughter, Miss 
Alice Torndyke, to Mr. Louis Newton Grant, of Goldsboro, North Carolina.

Miss Barrett is one of the most popular belles of the younger social set in New 
York, and, though a native of this city, is of Southern extraction, her 
grandparents having been native Georgians. Some two years ago Miss Barrett was a 
bridesmaid at a wedding in this city at which Mr. Grant was an usher, at which 
they met for the first time, and the friendship then formed between them has 
culminated in the engagement now announced. No date has been fixed, as yet, for 
the wedding, but will be shortly.

The Argus, in common with Mr. Grant's friends here - and they are all our people, 
for he is, and deservedly, universally esteemed in this city, his home, will be 
more than interested in this happy announcement, which will come in the nature of 
a surprise to many, and we all feel like extending our congratulations to the fair 
young bride-elect over her achievement, for we know the value of the spendid young 
man she has won, which, too, will be made known to her in the cordial welcome that 
awaits her in Goldsboro.
