Wayne County, NC - Will of Anna Maria Hill, 1859 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the name of God, Amen: I, Anna Maria Hill, of the County of Wayne, Being in good health and of sound mind, do, on this 26th day of September AD 1857, make this my last will and testament in manner & form following - After giving my body to the dust from whence it came and my soul to God, the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ - Item 1st - I give and bequesth to my adopted daughter, Anna M. Garber, all my new house furniture, that is all the Parlor furniture - one side board, three mahogany tables, (two dinner & one breakfast) and their furniture - four beds & steads, the four standing in the new house stairs, (the high Steads) - also my branch candlestick, mate to that already given to her, and the silver basket, mate to hers and all the silver marked with the letters AMH - I also give and devise to her the plantation I now live on and all the land belonging to me on the South side of Brooks Swamp, and my plantation lying in Duplin County on the South side of Goshen; I further give to her and her husband during their lives and the life of the survivor, the following slaves - Peter junior - Charles, his brother - Peruna, his wife and child Liza - Caroline & her son Heillory - Mary & her son Gilles - Edward - Smith & Rhodes and all their increase from the date of this will - and after the death of said Anna M. Garber & her husband, I give the said slaves and their increase, to the children of the said Anna, to be equally divided between them - and in the event of the death of any child of said Anna during the life of said Anna, leaving issue, and said issue shall represent the parent & take such slave as the parent would if living at the death of said Anna Item 2nd - I give and bequeath Gatsey - Mary & second girl - to Anna Bass Garber - together with her increase from the date of this will Item 3rd - I give and bequeath to Betty Barden - Farina, Mary & oldest girl, during her life - and at the death of Betty Barden, I give Farina & her increase from the date of this will, to the children of the said Betty Barden, to be equally divided between them, but I do not wish Farina taken from her mother until she is twelve years old. I also give to Betty Barden my plain silver candlesticks, one bed & stead and my twenty shares of stock in the Wilmington & Raleigh, now Wilmington & Weldon, Rail Road Company Item 4th - I give and bequeath to my neice Sally Ann Smith, negro girl Susan, (Hannah's child), and one bed and stead Item 5th - I give to Corina Rhodes, my niece, during her life, girl Amelia, and on her death, the said girl & her increase from this time, to be equally divided between any children the said Corina may have - but if the said Corina should die without issue, I give the said slave and her increase to Charles E. Rhodes, brother of Corina Item 6th - I give to said Charles E. Rhodes, boy-Arnold and his mother, Julia Item 7th - I give to Ann B. Griswold one bed & stead & the Bureau standing in the little room Item 8th - I give to Louisa M. Smith one bed & stead & my Bureau standing in my room Item 9th - I give to Mary Amanda Houston one bed & stead Item 10 - I give my little bed to Julia Hatch, wife of Richard Hatch Item 11 - I wish all beds given away in this will furnished Item 12 - I give to my nephew, Stephen U. Smith, negro boy Augusta, and his twin brother Anestus Item 13 - I wish all the remainder of my negroes, viz, Peter Senior - Teaner, his wife & Teaner, their child - Henry - Green - Bob - Hannah - Oliver - Leatty - Marshall - Harriet - Bryant - Alla - Shade - Cease - Eli - Winna - Nathan - Ben - and their increase from this date to this will - to be divided into three equal shares - one of which I give to my brother James Rhodes - one to the children of sister Smith - & the other to my sister Hatch during her life, and at her death her share to be divided between, her son Joseph R. Hatch - Ann Griswold & Louisa Smith - they each to pay two hundred dollars for the education of Richard Hatch's children - which money must be put out at interest till said children are large enough to go to school Item 15 - The stock and all the fixtures on my plantation were made over in the settlement by Dr. Hill, and I wish enough thereof to be sold to make a Brick wall some eighteen or twenty four inches high, with iron railing thereon the proper height, around the Family grave yard near Waynesboro - the brick to be covered with cement & the whole to be strong & durable - and I desire my remains to be buried as near my parents as they can be without interfering with other graves Item 16 - After the settlement of my estate - any balance remaining I give to the Bible Missionary and Tract Societies of the Methodist Church South Item 17 - I hereby appoint my brother James Rhodes & Dr. A.M. Garber, Executors to this my last will and testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the date above written Witness J.K. Green W.T. Green & Wm T. Dortch the subscribing witnesses thereto and is duly proved & admitted to probate & is ordered to be recorded. Wherefore James Rhodes one of the Executors therein named being a non resident of the State enters into bond of One Hundred Thousand Dollars with Dr. B.L. Hill, Jas. F.
