Wayne County, NC - Will of Elijah Croom, 1838

  In the name of God Amen I ELIJAH CROOM of the state of North
  Carolina Wayne county being of sound disposing mind and memory
  blessed be God do make and publish this my last will and testament
  in manner and form following To wit
  ITEM 1st  I loan unto to my beloved wife ZILPHA CROOM during her
  natural life or so long as she shall remain my widow all my property
  after paying my just debts, both personal and real for the purpose
  of bringing up and educating my children. But if my wife should wish 
  to make any donations to any of my children at the time of their 
  coming of age or marriage it is my will that she should do so she 
  having the donation valued at the time taken by two impartial persons 
  and an account made of the same as so much received by said heir 
  toward his or her part or share
  ITEM 2nd  Should my wife see cause to depart from her widowhood
  then it is my will that my property should as soon as possible be 
  equally divided between my children share and share alike
  ITEM 3rd  It is my will that if my wife should die before the 
  marriage or comming of age of my children that each heir should share 
  equally alike male and female
     In witness whereof I the said ELIJAH CROOM have hereunto set my
  hand and seal to this my last will and testament in the year of our 
  Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven and the 27th of 
  December And I hereby nominate and appoint my beloved wife ZILPHA 
  CROOM and my worthy friend WILLIAM THOMPSON as executrix and executor 
  of this my will and last testament the year and date above written in
  presence of
