Wayne County, NC - Will of James Handley Senr., 1823 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the Name of God Amen I JAMES HANDLEY SEN. of the County of Wayne and State of North Carolina being in a low state of health but of sound mind and memory do make Constitute and ordain this to be my last will and testament utterly hereby revoking all and every other will or wills by me hereto- fore made. ITEM 1st I give to my son DANIEL HANDLEY one half of a six hundred and forty acre patten (sic) lying on the west side of the road leading from the cross roads to Waynesborough also to Negro boys named Kinchen and Lewis to him and his heirs forever ITEM 2nd I lend unto my daughter SALLEY HANDLEY one hundred acres of Land where MILLEY HEAD now lives joining HENRY ROBERTS line as long as She continues to live without marriage also I lend my daughter SALLEY HANDLEY during her Natural Life two Negroes named Cloe and Sabo and after her death it is my will that they and their increase should be equally divided between her five children to wit WASHINGTON, PENELOPE, JACKSON, JAMES and JOHN RASMUS HANDLEY. I give to my daughter SALLEY HANDLEY my riding mare bridle and saddle one cow and calf one feather bed and furniture one flax wheel one woolen wheel one dish half dozzen (sic) plates one case knives & forks one table one flat iron one iron pot rack and pot and as much provisions of all kind as may be necessary for the support of herself and family one year from my death ITEM 3rd I give and bequeath to my son WILLIAM HANDLEY the planta- tion on whereon I now live and the rest of my lands note (sic) given nor lent also three Negroes by the names of Jack Musher will & Peter one feather bed & furniture two cows and calves two sows and piggs (sic) one yoke of oxen one Beaufat one Still and all my Cider one Cotton Machine one table one Iron pot Rack and pot one grey horse bridle and Saddle and as much provision of all kind as may be thought sufficient for the support of himself and family while a new crop is made to him and his heirs forever ITEM 4th I give to my son JAMES HANDLEY one Negro boy by the name Luke to him and his heirs forever ITEM 5th I give to my daughter PENELOPE APPLEWHITE one Negro girl Named Charlot to her and her heirs forever ITEM 6th I give to my daughter KEZIAH LEE one Negro woman by the name of Dinah to her and her heirs forever ITEM 7th I give and bequeath unto SALLEY, KEZIAH, BETSEY and POLLY HOWELL heirs of my daughter ALLEY HOWELL, Deceast (sic) the money arising from the Sale of a Negro woman named Agg which it is my will Should be Sold after my decease by my Executors on a credit of six months and the money be equally divided among them share and share alike ITEM 8th It is my will and desire that a Negro man by the name Cato be Sold by my Executors hereinafter named on a Credit of six months and the money arising from the Sale therebe equally divided between NANCY HOWELL, POLLEY GARDNER, ELIZABETH RAGLEY, JERIMIAH BELL and HENRY BELL heirs of my daughter ELIZABETH BELL Dec'd and I give the same to them and their heirs forever ITEM 9th I give to my grand Daughter POLLY HOWELL one Negro girl by the name of Patience and one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever ITEM 10th I lend to my daughter POLLEY LEWIS one Negro woman by the name Lucy duren (sic) her natural life and after her decease to be equally Divided between her five sons JOHN C.
