Wayne County, NC - Will of Benjamin Herring, 1844 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I BENJAMIN HERRING of the county of Wayne in the State of North Carolina, Being of sound and perfect mind and memory do hereby make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following. To wit: Item First I give and bequeath to my wife CEALY HERRING one bed, bedstead and furniture and all the crockery (things ?) and the knives and forks, one weeding hoe, all the chairs and tables in the dwelling house, all the cooking utensils and other things belonging to the kitchen. One trunk, one ox, one cow and calf, three goats and one sow, one chest, one beehive, one rug (two sentences that I can't read) the slay and harness, all the geese and chickens one stack of fodder. Also the following notes. One note on ETHELDRED HERRING for about seventy dollars One note on ERASTUS HAM for about twenty five dollars One note on JOSEPH ENGRAM (INGRAM) for about ten dollars One note on COUNCIL BEST for about eleven dollars Item Second I give and bequeath to my son ETHELDRED HERRING his dark boy, HOOKS, one stack blade fodder, two plows and ________, one weeding hoe, one bull yearling,________, one shot gun, one set plow ____ and three gallon jugs. Item Third I give and bequeath to my son HENRY HERRING one bed and bedstead one cow and calf, two head hogs, five barrels of corn, one stack fodder, two plows, and one weeding hoe, one bull yearling, one grubbing hoe, _________, and one drawing knife. Item Fourth I give and bequeath to my daughter SMITHY GARRIS one bed bedstead and furniture and one chest all of which she has now in possession. Item Fifth I give and bequeath to my daughter MORNING ANDERSON after the death of my wife, one bed, bedstead and furniture and two chests and I lend the same to my wife during her life. The balance of my hogs and cows and any other articles which I may have omitted to mention in the above bequeaths, I wish sold and the money for the same appropriated to the payment of my just debts and if any surplus should be left of the same after paying my debts, I wish said surplus equally divided between my sons ETHELDRED and HENRY. And lastly I hereby constitute and appoint my son ETHELDRED HERRING, my Executor to this my last will fully and freely publishing and declaring this to be my only true and lawful Will and Testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me made.
