Wayne County, NC - Will of Arthur Howell, 1823 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the Name of God Amen I, ARTHUR HOWELL of the County of Wayne and State of North Carolina being in a low state of health but of sound mind and memory do make constitute and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in the following manner and form (to wit) First I lend to my wife during her natural life or widowhood all that part of my land north of the first crop fence from the house I live in and in a straight direction with said fence to the back line. The balance of my land it is my desire should be rented out until my youngest son arrives at the age of twenty one, then the whole of my land that I possess it is my will should be equally divided between my four sons, EPHRAIM, TURNER, ETHELDRED and WM. HOWELL, share and share alike to them and their heirs forever. I also lend to my wife during her life or widowhood two sows and seventeen shoats, three cows and calves, seven head of sheep, two beds and furniture, one Negro Boy by the name of SAM, half dozen plates, half dozen cups and saucers, two dishes, one bowl, one pot, one dutch oven, one skillet, one spider, two tables, one chest, one cask knives and forks, one cart and wheels, one little mare, all my plows and gear, two tubs, one pail, two pegs, two grubbing hoes, three weeding hoes, one loom, all my geese and poultry and after her death or marriage to be sold and disposed of as herein after mentioned. I give to my wife such part of my crop of every kind as may be thought sufficient for herself and families support one year after my death. I give and bequeath to my two daughters BETSY and KEZIAH HOWELL one Negro woman named ROSE and one bed and furniture each to them and their heirs forever. I give to my son EPHRAIM one bed and furniture. I give to my son TURNER fifty dollars in money and when he arrives at the age of twenty one years, I give him and my son EPHRAIM one Negro Boy by the name of ABRAM. I also give my sons TURNER, WILLIAM and ETHELDRED the two beds and furniture that I have lent to their mother, on her death or marriage. It is further my will that all my estate not lent or given away be sold and after all my just debts are paid and ten dollars to each of my four sons for the use of their education, together with the rent of my land and hire of the Negro boy ABRAM be equally divided between all my eight children, except my daughter SARAH DANIEL, who I only give five shillings and the part or share that would be coming to her , I give to her children that may be living at the time the division may take place. I further more do give to my two sons WILLIAM and ETHELDRED the Negro Boy SAM, lent to their mother, on her death or marriage, to them and their heirs forever. I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint JESSE THOMPSON Executor to this my last Will, revoking all others heretofore made by me, given under my hand and seal this 3rd day of August 1823.
