Wayne County, NC - Will of James Jordan, 1782 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the name of God Amen the 13th day of June 1782 I JAMES JORDAN of Wayne County and State of North Carolina, being sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory Thanks be given to God. For the same, and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this Instrument to contain my Last Will and Testament In manner and form follow- ing That is to say Principally and First of all I give and recommend my sole into the hands of almighty God that gave it me and my body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named and as touching such worldly Estate it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life. I give Desire and Dispose of the same in manner and form following (To witt) Imprimes, I give and bequeath to HENRY HOWELL son of ROBERT HOWELL, deceased all my right and title of the land of two hundred and forty three acres more or less lying above the B____ Tree branch and formerly possessed by his Father ROBERT HOWELL to him and his heirs forever ITEM I lend to my beloved wife ELIZABETH all the rest of my land and plantation during her Life, and I do desire that my Children may not be disturbed on the said Lands Also I lend my wife Ten cows and calves and their increase during her Life time and two of the best Stears and my Gray horse and Bay horse and mare and colt and also I lend her four feather beds and furniture. Except one or more of my children should marry or come of age and then for them to have a bed and furniture. Also I lend my wife all my household furniture and Plantation Utensils and I lend my wife Two Negro men Harry and Peter and my wench Lucy and her Increase and five Ewes and Lambs and one Ram and all the wool we sheard off of the sheep this spring, and as many sows and piggs as my Executor thinks my wife will be able to keep and also Three Thousand weight of pork for her house meat, and also my crops of everything as it now stands only what is due, and one side saddle and Bridle and my own saddle to keep for the use of the Plantation and what Cotton and Flax she may want for the use of her Family, and Leather enough for to shoe her family the Ensuing year, and also Ten, year old hogs of my own raising for another year and two, year old yearlings at the WIDOW HARRISONS' and one pair of silver shoe buckels, and one Peacock Hat all during my said wife Life Time ITEM I give to my daughter NANCY JORDAN one Negro girl named Junier at her coming to Lawful age or marriage to her and her heirs Forever ITEM I give to my daughter SILVIER JORDAN one Negro girl named Sall and my Sorrel mare to be sold and The money to go to my said daughter SILVIER to her and her heirs Forever ITEM I give to my daughter POLLY JORDAN one Negro girl named Gille and four Thousand pounds of Pork to her and her heirs forever ITEM I give to my daughter ELIZABETH JORDAN all the Estate as I lent my wife at her death (my lands only excepted) To her and her heirs Forever ITEM My desire is that the Land as I lent my wife, at her death may be sold and the money got thereby and the rest of my Estate as I have not heretofore particulared mentioned to be equally divided between my four said daughters namly SILVIER, POLLY and ELIZABETH JORDAN (said four, but named three) and to school them, to them and their heirs Forever And my desire is that WILLIAM WOOD may keep the sheep of mine he has on Stock till he has a mind to give them ____ and then to be divided Equally among my four children before mentioned to them and their heirs Forever AND Lastly I constitute nominate and appoint my Loving Brother FREDERICK JORDAN, ABSOLOM WILLIAMS and BENJAMIN HARRISON Executors of this my Last Will and Testament disannulling revoking and making void all other wills and Testaments by me made Ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament In witness whereof I Have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year first within written.
