Wayne County, NC - Will of Joel Newsom Sr., 1820 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the name of God amen I, JOEL NEWSOM SR., of the state of North Carolina and county of Wayne being in a low state of health, but of perfect mind and memory, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form as follows to wit. ITEM I lend unto my wife PENELOPE NEWSOM one half the plantation whereon I now live with half the west room of my dwelling house and kitchen, also one feather bed and furniture, half dozen siting chairs, two pewter dishes, two basins, half dozen plates, the iron ware that belongs to the kitchen, a sufficient quantity of corn and fodder as will serve her and her family one year and a sufficient quantity of provision as will last her and family the same term and two cows and calves, two sows and pigs, also the sum of fifty dollars to purchase her a horse, also two Negroes (to wit) TOM and NEL, also as much cotton flax and wool as shall be sufficient to serve her and family for one year, also four Ewes, also two plow hoes, two weeding hoes, one ax and one grubbing hoe. The above named property I lend unto my wife during her natural life or widowhood and after her death or widowhood it is my will and desire that the whole be sold and be disposed of as I hereafter direct. ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son, JOHN NEWSOM, the other half of my plantation, with the east end of my present dwelling house with half the fruit that grows on my orchard, also after the death or widowhood of my wife, I give unto my son JOHN the other half of the said plantation to him and his heirs forever, also the sum of two hundred dollars. ITEM I give and bequeath unto my daughter, MARY NEWSOM, the sum of two hundred dollars and one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath unto daughter, REBECCA NEWSOM, the sum of three hundred dollars and one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath unto my daughter PATIENCE PEARCE one tract of land lying and being in the county of Johnson adjoining the lands whereon WEST PEARCE now lives, it being the land I purchased of LEMUEL PEARCE, also the sum of sixty dollars to her and her heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath unto my daughter SARAH HOWELL the sum of two hundred dollars to her and her heirs forever. ITEM I lend unto my daughter in law ELENDER NEWSOM the tract of land where on she now lives until she dies, marrys or until her son LEWIS NEWSOM arrives to the age of twenty one years and for her to lend one half the cleared land one year and the other next and I also give unto her all the property that she is now in possession of that I purchased at a sale of EPHRAIM NEWSOM sold by virtue of execution, to her and her heirs forever. ITEM I give unto my grandson, LEWIS NEWSOM, the tract of land above mentioned after the lent to his mother is expired provided he shall pay to his two sisters (vs) NANCY and MARY NEWSOM the sum of one hundred dollars each within two years after he arrives to the age of twenty one years, if not, to be equally divided between him and his two sisters, above named, to them and theirs forever. ITEM I give unto my grandson, JOEL NEWSOM, son of ROBERT NEWSOM, the sum of one hundred dollars to him and his heirs forever. ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son JOEL NEWSOM all the tract of land on the south side of the March Branch and Negro, SAM, to him and his heirs forever. It is further my will and desire that all my estate not yet disposed of be equally divided between my sons, JOSEPH, ISAAC and JOHN and my two daughters, MARY and REBECCA NEWSOM. It is further my will and desire that the property I lent unto my wife be sold after her death or widowhood and be equally divided between my last named children. I constitute and appoint my son JOEL NEWSOM and my friend, CADER WOODARD, my whole and sole executors to this my last will and testament in witness I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26th September, 1818.
