July the 1st 1844 Wilkes County, NC Dear Daughter We received your lines of sorrow on the 27 of June last and we can not describe to you our feelings of distress & sorrow to hear of the death of our dear son whom we raised and nourished until he left us and traveled to that country to seek his fortune there, but he has only shared the common fate of us all. We greatly lament and simpathy your sorrow, cears and labors and would freely aid you and comfort you if it was in our power but we trust the Lord will fullfill his promise and be a husband to you and a father to your children. We would be glad to see you and your children but we have no prospects of ever coming to that country. You wrote to us that you have ten children but did not write to us whether they were large enough to help you any. We wish you as soon as you get this letter to send us an answer as soon as you can. Write how you are doing and how many of your children is boys and how many girls and what their names is and how you are satisfied in that country. Dear Daughter, we are advanced in years and of course cannot continue here much longer and as opportunity favourable to write please to write to us by every opportunity.
