John Kerr Smith The STANDARD of Raleigh, Oct. 8, 1862 DIED, in the County of Wilkes, N. C., on the 9th of Sept, 1862, LIEUTENANT JOHN KERR SMITH, son of REV. S. P. and A. M. SMITH, aged 34 years, six months and 19 days. In August 1861, LIEUTENANT SMITH was licensed to practice law, and entered the profession of his choice with no ordinary prospects of success. In January, 1862, the war, having assumed so serious a type, he relinquished his fond anticipations of success at the bar, and entered his country's service as a private under CAPT. C. N. HICKERSON'S Company B, 37th Regiment N. C. Troops. Early in April following, he was, from his manly deportment and soldiering mien, promoted to a Lieutenanacy, and as such remained in the service till wounded in one of the series of battles below Richmond, when he resigned his commission and returned home to his friends hoping to regain his lost health; but alas! to die from the effects of wounds received while defending the soil of the "Sunny South" upon the banks of the Chickahominy. LIEUT. SMITH was always an affectionate and obedient son, a kind brother, and generous friend, and his family and friends may well lament his early fall. He made a public profession of the Christian religion, and the writer is informed conversed freely and often upon the subject after his return home from the army.
