All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Mark Burks markaburks@gmail.com March 19, 2016, 6:20 pm Pension Pension application of Leonard Rice W3869 Sally HQ10NC1 Transcribed by Will Graves 11/19/10 State of Georgia Elbert County: SS On this fifteenth day of July in the year 1833, personally appeared in open Court before Dilliard Herndon, William A Beck, Isaac Almand, & Robert B Christian Justices of the Inferior Court in and for Elbert County State of Georgia now sitting, Leonard Rice a resident of the County of Elbert State of Georgia, age Seventy-three years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June the Seventh 1832, That he entered the service of the United States under the following named Officers, and served as herein stated, that he volunteered into the service of the United States in the County of Wilks 2 [sic, Wilkes] State of North Carolina, then the place of his residence, in the month of March in the year 1780 under Captain Henderson of Wilkes County State of North Carolina, as a Sergeant for three months, and after marching in various places in the State of North Carolina, after having served three months as a Sergeant was discharged at a place called Ramsour's in the State of North Carolina in the month of June 1780, all under the command of General Caswell, That he also entered into the service of the United States for three months as a Substitute for one Joseph Dobson, in Wilkes County State of North Carolina, then the place of his residence, in the month of __1780 under Captain William Nawl3 in a Regiment commanded by Major Armstrong all under the command of General Rutherford, joined his Regiment at Salisbury marched from thence near Camden in the State of South Carolina where General Gates assumed the command, a few days afterwards engaged the Enemy near that place Commanded by Lord Cornwallis, on the Sixteenth day of August 1780, where the American Army was completely defeated and dispersed, after this defeat went to Mellenburg [sic, Mecklenburg?] North Carolina where he was discharged after having served three months as a private in the Service of the United States the exact date of his discharge he does not precisely recollect. That he also entered into the service of the United States for three months as a substitute for one John Clark Junior, in Washington County State of North Carolina, then the place of his residence, in the month of March 1781 under Captain Clark in a Regiment commanded by Colonel Sevier rendezvoused at a place called Grassy Cove marched over the Bald Mountains in North Carolina to Big Ivey Creek from thence to the French Broad River, from thence to an Indian town called Tackasega [sic, Tuckaseegee?] where he fought the Indians, where there was killed about 25 of them and some prisoners taken, after the Battle with the Indians marched home - Where he was discharged after having served three months as a private in the service of the United States, the exact date of his discharge he does not now recollect. That he also entered into the Service of the United States for three months as a Substitute for a man whose name he does not now recollect under Captain John Beverly, commanded by Colonel Benjamin Herndon in the month of _1781 all commanded by General McDowell, that he resided in Wilkes County State of North Carolina when he entered into this service, joined his Regiment in Burke County marched from thence to the settlements on the Tennessee River after marching in various directions through the Indian Country returned to his place of residence where he was discharged after having served three months as a private in the service of the United States, but cannot recollect the date of his discharge, and all making three months service as a Sergeant, and nine months service as a private, in the service of the United States during the Revolutionary War. That during his first tour of service he served with no other Troops but the Militia, during his second Tour of service he served with the Continental regiments and Companies, composing the troops commanded by General Gates, but does not recollect them by name, that he knew General Gates, Baron DeKalb, of the Regulars, the two last Tours [of] Service which he performed he only served with Militia, That he has no documentary evidence, and that he knows of no person, whose testimony he can procure, who can testify to his services as a Soldier of the Revolutionary War. He says that he was born in Goochland County State of Virginia on the __ day of __ in the year 1759, that he has no record of his age and that there never was one, as he has been informed. That he lived when called into service the two first times in the County of Wilkes State of North Carolina; the third time when called into service he lived in Washington County State of North Carolina; the fourth and last time when called into service he lived in Wilkes County State of North Carolina; where he lived after the revolutionary war about two years then removed to Elbert County in the State of Georgia where he has lived ever since and now resides there. That the first time when called into service he volunteered the second time when called into service he substituted for one Joseph Dobson, the third time when called into service he substituted for one John Clark Junior, the fourth and last time when called into service he substituted for man whose name he does not now recollect. The names of some of the Regular Officers who were with the Troops where he served he says were General Gates, Baron DeKalb, Colonel Armond, Colonel Porterfield and Colonel Armstrong; and that he served with the Continental Regiment commanded by Baron DeKalb and the North Carolina and Virginia Militia commanded by Generals Rutherford and Stephens, all under the command of General Gates, at the Battle commonly called Gates defeat near Camden in the State of South Carolina, on the 16th day of August 1780, and that the other Tours of duty which he performed he served with no other Troops but his own Regiment; He says that he received written discharges from the service for the two first tours of duty which he performed, which have been either lost or destroyed a long time cents; for the last two Tours of duty which he performed he only received Verbal discharges. The names of persons to whom I am known in my present neighborhood and who can testify to my character for veracity and their belief of my services as a Soldier of the Revolution our Colonel Charles W Christian, Thomas Haynes, John Dickie, the Honorable Wylie Thompson, John W White and Thomas Maxwell. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the Agency of any State.
