Hampton, a colored minister of Wilkesboro was united in the holy bonds of wedlock to Miss Neely Tidline, Rev. Gibson officiating. The ceremony was performed only a few minutes before the west bound train reached here and the happy couple did not get downtown until the train had pulled up to the water tank about 30 yards from the depot. The bride boarded it there. While the groom was purchasing tickets the train pulled out for Wilkesboro. He uttered a deep groan, cast one wild glance at the moving cars, resolved to catch the train or die in the attempt, struck a gait that Nancy Hanks will never be able to beat and encouraged by the cheers of the crowd, in a few seconds overhauled the train and was soon seated beside his bonny bride who was almost in hysterics on account of the trick the fates had endeavored to play on them.
