LETTER-date 30 March 1923 From J.T. HORNE of Tuscaloosa, Ala. To T. J. NEWSOME of Wilmington, N.C. Some months ago Mrs. M. B. OVERMAN of Wilson, N.C. forwarded to me a very interesting letter which she had just received from you, with data concerning your branch of the HORNE family. I was especially interested in your letter. I am ver anxious to know if you have any information concerning father's family. My father is James Thomas HORNE, His father was William Henry HORNE. My grandfather, William HORNE, was born in what is now Wilson C ounty, North Carolina in 1833. After the death of William HORNE'S father in 1853, the widow and all of the children except one daughter by first marriage removed to Indiana. There my father was born and lived until recent years when he came south because of business, the timber supply being so nearly exhausted in Indiana. Below I am stating briefly the chronology of our family, with dates so far back as I have been able to secure them, thinking that you may have some definite knowledge of some of the ancestors. I feel sure that a few generations back, we were all of the same family, if only we can get the connecting link. Some years ago father made a visit to Wilson, N.C. and surrounding towns seeking information bot as to his father and mother's families. There were very few who could give him satisfactory information but he was told that the HORNE'S came from England about 1750 and settled first near Baltimore, Maryland; later moving to N.C. By others I have been told that the HORNE'S came from England to Virginia and later moved on the N.C. Henry HORNE married ? Thomas HORNE, their son, born 1753 (not sure this date is correct) Thomas HORNE married Selah or Celia VICK and their children were: Anne HORNE: Dec. 21, 1771 Abel HORNE: born Dec. 27, 1773. Demaris HORNE: born April 29, 1776. Nathan HORNE:born Aug. 8, 1778. Joel HORNE, born Sept. 8, 1781. Mary HORNE, born Nov. 6, 1783. Sarah HORNE, born May 26, 1786. Orpha HORNE, born Dec. 18, 1778. Sidney HORNE, born July 7, 1790. Thomas HORNE, born April 27, 1793. Wilson HORNE, born July 12, 1798. Thomas HORNE, son of Thomas and Celia Vick HORNE married first Mary HENBY, their children: Martha HORNE, born March 12, 1817. Mary HORNED, born November 9, 1918. After the death of his first wife, he married Phoebe, the daughter of Jacob and Sally HORNE, who was born Aug. 4, 1800. Their children were: John HORNE, born Nov. 7, 1820. Wiley HORNE, born Oct. 7, 1822. Josiah HORNE, born March 27, 1825. Elizabeth HORNE, born July 29, 1828. Thomas HORNE, born Aug. 23, 1831. William HORNE, born Dec. 16, 1833, my grandfather. Nancy HORNE, born March 18, 1836. Hardy HORNE, born April 1838. As I stated above, all the children of Thomas HORNE, with the exception of the one daughter Mary removed to Indiana in 1853 and 1854. This daughter Mary married a BONE and had several children; among them were Martha, Mary, James, Thomas and Peninah. All trace of the descendants of the above named Mary Horne BONE has been lost but there is no doubt but what many of them are living in or near Wilson, N.C. If only we could secure one clue from which to make inquiries. Do you happen to know anything concerning these descendants? I shall appreciate it very greatly if you will fill out and return the enclosed sheet to me. Also can you suggest any one else to whom I might write for information? Awaiting your reply at your earliest convenience. Very truly your, Lelia E. HORNE (Also included in letter) Nannie SIMMS married (unknown first name) HORNE, a son or whom Edith HORNE (daughter of Nannie Simms HORNE) married Hardy HORNE, a son of whom Hardy HORNE, cousin of Edith HORNE, was the son of whom How were he and Edith HORNE related? Are any of the direct descendants of this Hardy HORNE line living? Can you give names and addresses of any of them? To what part of Indiana did Hardy HORNE go? Did you at one time live in Wilson, N.C.? I ask this because my Uncle John Robert HORNE, now deceased, made a trip to Wilson from Indiana, when a very young man. Unfortunately he kept very little record of his trip. Among the names of those he recorded as seeing on this trip is the name of James NEWSOME and I wondered if it might be that you were living in Wilson at that time. My uncle made this trip in 1883. My Great Grandfather was Larry NEWSOME, and I am very much interested in gathering as much information as possible on this branch of my family. While in Fremont, I also located the gravestones of my great great grandfather Joel NEWSOME, and his wife Elizabeth. I left there with Frank "C" and he plans to do something about setting them in one of the family lots. Do you know what Elizabeth's maiden name was? I would like very much to get any information you may have concerning your branch of the NEWSOME family as far back as available, and would greatly appreciated your sending me copies of any records you may have. I have been doing some research in the Library of congress, and find that a lot of the NEWSOMES who came here in the early days were Quakers. Would that be our branch? It seems to me I remember hearing my great grandmother, Betty NEWSOME, say that some of our forbears were Quakers, but I was very young when she died and am not sure whether she had reference to the NEWSOMES, WOODARDS, or AYCOCKS. If there is any expense in connection with the copying of such records as you may have, I will be more than glad to reimburse you for it. Frank "C" also said he thought you had a NEWSOME Coat of Arms. If so, I would like to have a copy. Thanking you in advance for any information you may be able to give me. I am sincerely yours.
