Full particulars cannot yet be ascertained. It is only known that Wilkes Jones, a colored shoemaker, cut his wife's throat from ear to ear, causing almost instant death. Immediately after the killing Jones shot and wounded another woman named Annie Williams, the ball taking effect in the lower jaw. Jones has for years been a leader in political circles in this county. His wife was a sister of S H Vick, ex-postmaster of this place. Up to a late hour Jones had not been arrested. Great excitement prevails in the negro quarters of the town and there is a chance that Vick's friends may attempt to lynch Jones if he is caught.
