The Sheriff of Wilson County, NC, Mr. Jonas Crowell, according to the local 
papers' account on him, is "brave as a lion, bold as a cyclone, inflexible as 
adamant, yet he is as gentle in his dealings as the whispering of the softest 
breeze, and is as tender in his feelings as the down upon the thistle." Mr. 
Crowell is evidently wasted in his present vocation. He ought to take the road 
as a life insureance canvasser or an agent for the sale of choice fruit trees. 
How he had managed to keep out of Congress is not explained.

Salisbury, Oct. 5 - Mr. P.A. Frercks, owner and for 14 years manager of the 
Mt. Vernon Hotel, has leased the property to Mr. J.W. Crowell, of Asheville, 
who takes charge on the 15th of the present month. Mr. Crowell was for 12 
years sheriff of Wilson County, and before and since his term of office has 
been a commercial traveler. He will doubtless sustain the reputation of the 
hotel with the traveling public. Mr. Frercks retires from active business 
life. He and Mrs. Frercks will continue to live at the hotel.
