Mr. Crowell is evidently wasted in his present vocation. He ought to take the road as a life insureance canvasser or an agent for the sale of choice fruit trees. How he had managed to keep out of Congress is not explained. Charlotte Daily Observer 6 Oct 1899 Salisbury, Oct. 5 - Mr. P.A. Frercks, owner and for 14 years manager of the Mt. Vernon Hotel, has leased the property to Mr. J.W. Crowell, of Asheville, who takes charge on the 15th of the present month. Mr. Crowell was for 12 years sheriff of Wilson County, and before and since his term of office has been a commercial traveler. He will doubtless sustain the reputation of the hotel with the traveling public. Mr. Frercks retires from active business life. He and Mrs. Frercks will continue to live at the hotel.
