YANCEY COUNTY, NC - CEMETERIES - Abandoned Halley Roland/Gibbs Cemetery ----¤¤¤¤---- About 3 miles west of Burnsville, turn right onto Cane River School Road. The cemetery is immediately on the right on an overgrown bank. Condition: Grown up in bushes and abandoned 1. Jessie J. Gibbs, 9-28-1882 - 3-1-1883, son of John and Jane Bailey Gibbs 2. Andy Wilson - A slave (No dates available) Grave unidentified. (Said by Martha Lou Gibbs to be buried here. He lived with Charlie Allen on Banks Creek ) In the overgrown condition I could see about 15 or more graves marked with fieldstones or indicated by sunken areas. Others have said they remember when there were 50 or more graves there. I have been told that slaves were buried there and that a Negro man, killed while working on road construction, was also buried there. Update: In late 2000 and early 2001 this cemetery was bulldozed and totally destroyed. After court procedure Mr. Bryant agreed to replace Jesse Gibbs' stone and place another with the names of all know to be buried here. "LOCATED HERE WAS AN OLD CEMETERY KNOWN AS THE HENRY "HALLE" ROLAND CEMETERY. FOR AN EARLY SETTLER. THERE WERE AN INDETERMINABLE NUMBER OF GRAVES HERE.
