Additional Information: Note: There is a small house, about 8' X 10' built over grave # 73. It has windows on three sides and a door on the other side. Inside is the stone marking the grave. The floor is covered with white sand with a little mound in the center where the grave is. The windows have curtains and little baskets with flowers. There are little tables with scarves and seashells, flowers, and other items that belonged to her. On one table is a picture of Jesus. At one time all her toys were there, some have been taken. "Never a drop of rain rained on it. It was cover with a tent until the house was built". This grave and others near by face East except for the Mother and Father's graves which face North toward the door to this little house. Her family had been to the hospital to visit her Grandmother Margaret, and were walking home, down the street in Woodfin, NC. Edna and Liston were holding hands and a car driven by a drunk man came by and hit Edna and dragged her body a long distance down the street. She died instantly. Liston would never talk about the accident until he had a stroke that affected his mind and about two weeks before he died would talk about Edna. There is a large rostrum-like structure built out of rocks that looks like a large headstone, but was said to have been built by John Metcalf so the preacher would have a place to preach when they had services at the cemetery. It had a concrete slab on top. John had gotten a large sum of money from the accident and no one knew what he did with it. Someone thought he had hidden it in this structure and took a crowbar and pried the top off to try to find the money. Discarded stone with "Edna Dean Penland" marks graves of Mitch Willis and wife Sallie Phillips Willis # 72 & 73; also two fieldstones are there, but no dates or names on them. #46 - Grovie Hensley Metcalf, wife of Dewey Metcalf had had her leg amputated and it is buried in unmarked grave # 44. She later died in child birth; the baby also died and is buried in grave # 45. Grovie was a sister to Prudence Banks that was shot and killed. #55, 56, 57 were killed by Gross, Carl, Coy & Gay Banks at the old red store. Prudence Hensley was the wife of Gross Banks. There was a family argument and Prudence stepped in front of her father and was shot and killed along with her father and brother. She was holding her young son but he was not injured. The shooting was declared self-defense and they were never charged. They did not have a happy life after that: Gross lost his mind, his son was killed in an automobile accident; Carl died from cancer; and another one died in a car wreck. # 4 LeeRoy Penland was shot and killed by a jealous husband. His son that was with him got his leg shot off. #6 - Arvil Penland was shot and killed by Carol Penland. # 34 & 35: One child died from burns when she crawled in the fire. The other one was shot and killed by it's brother. # 52 drowned when she was swept into the river All this information about the unmarked graves and other happenings was furnished by Ossie Penland, wife of Liston Penland. She will be 79 in October and has a very clear mind. She walks to the cemetery about 3 or 4 times a week.
