YANCEY COUNTY, NC - CEMETERIES - Proffitt-Rucker (Negro) Cemetery --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Location: At Bald Creek, turn onto Sam Robertson Road and go about ¾ mile. Turn left onto a gravel road and go to the end of this road, bear left and go a short distance in a private driveway and look to the right you will see periwinkle on a bank. Condition: Bad, grown up in trees and briars. Thought to be buried here are: 1. Dock Rucker, born Jan. 1853 in South Carolina, S/o Jack & Mary Rucker 2. Clearsy Wilson Rucker, W/o # 1, born Feb. 1876, Married 12-19-1898 in Yancey County, NC., D/o Jordan & Lucinda Wilson. 3. Isac Rucker, born April, 1898, S/o Dock & Clearsy 4. William McKinley Howard, 10-26-1915 - 10-27-1915, Son of Wm. Howard and Tessie Rucker. 5. William Howard, 6. Tessie Rucker Howard, Born March, 1900, D/o Dock & Clearsy Rucker, W/o William Howard. William & Tessie had one other child, Mary Louise, born 1-7-1917 that is possibly buried here. The Ruckers were said to be slaves of Bob Proffitt. It is not known if any Proffitts are buried here but considering the name of the cemetery in the 1939-40 WPA Cemetery survey it is possible that Bob Proffitt and his family are buried here. There were several sunken areas but no tombstones. Donald Tipton, a local man, told me he had previously seen several graves marked with fieldstone but recently when he was there, he saw no sign of the rocks which has probably sunk in the ground. There was a large area covered with periwinkle which is typical of these old cemeteries. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
