YANCEY COUNTY, NC - CEMETERIES - Whittington (Lafayette) Cemetery aka (Wilson Grave Yard) ----¤¤¤¤---- Location: Approximately 5 miles west of Burnsville, turn onto Walking Road. Go to farm road between the first two house and then up thru the valley/pasture, follow somewhat of a road to the right to the top of the ridge, follow ridge to the right and to the cemetery. Cemetery is located across the fence in the woods. Condition: Poor SURNAMES: DOGGINS, WHITTINGTON, WILSON 1. Emily M. Whittington, (10-8-1871 - 3-24-1944 of Influenza, Retired Post Mistress, born in Missouri, D/o # 3 & 4) 2. Lelia Belle Whittington, (1- -1873 - after 1944) (D/o # 3 & 4) 3. Lafayette Whittington, 4-26-1838 - 1-14-1916 (Doctor died of TB) "An Honest Man's The Noblest Work of God. 4. Anneliza Whittington, 5-11-1836 10-4-1908, W/o # 3, (D/o # 6 & 7 "A Tender Mother and a Faithful Friend" 5. (Thomasina Doggins, a little girl about 3 years old who became ill while passing by with her family and was taken to Dr. Whittington but he was unable to save her. This information was given to Lloyd Bailey by Arnold Proffitt) 6. HMW (In Memory of Harvey Wilson, 9-11-1839 - 8-29-1864. According to war records he died 9-21-1864 in Virginia in Civil War - Son of Emily & S. L. Wilson) 7. S.L.Wilson, 3-1-1806 - 11-4-1892 "A kind father and a friend to all" 8. Emily (Elizabeth) Wilson, 8-13-1811 - 7-17-1894 "She bore the cross the she wore the crown" (D/o John Jefferson and Sarah Susanna Dugger Whittington) (Info in parentheses is from death records, census or other sources) Note: Large tombstone of # 1 & # 2 was turned over and we were unable to read it but a credible source, Margaret Whittington King, said it is Miss Emily and Miss Bell, only children of Lafayette and Anneliza Whittington. #5. Marked with heart shaped fieldstone #6.
