YANCEY COUNTY, NC - LETTERS - Jane Byrd to her sister Myra Byrd Hensley --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Burnsville, N.C. Feb 28th, 1902 Dear Sister Mirah I am glad to write to you this evening. I feel very happy as the pleasant sunshine comes through the window after our hard storm last night and I feel thankful to God for the sunshine and rain and for all of his kindness to us. I also thank him for brothers and sisters and for the ability of talking to them by letters. Well every body seems happy in our little town the school children about three hundred and fifty of which the two schools consist seem to be growing up in intelligence to take the place in our country which we older people now hold. We have a new baptist building here, the first session opened last fall. They have enrolled two hundred scholars. The presbyterians have a good school also. Prof. Flack is the principal of the baptist school. He boards with us. we all think well of him. Well Mirah how are you all. We are all well here at home now. Brother Sidney Peterson is very sick. He was taken with paralisis nearly five months ago. We expect him to live only a few days. Sister Betsey is as well as you could expect. Jane her only single child and her waits on him all the time. Our other brothers and sisters are well as far as I know now. I wrote to William and Sue who lives in Tennessee. I received a letter from them a few weeks ago. They are getting along very well. William is at work at a sawmill. I want to receive a long letter from you tell me everything about the country you can and crops. Tell the children to write to me and I will close for this time expecting you to write soon to us who live away here in Burnsville N.C. Your loving sister Jane Byrd May God bless you all is my prayer ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
