MILITARY: 'NC Troops: 1861-1865', Co I, 29th regiment infantry, 'Private Lewis P. Silver resided in Mitchell Co where he enlisted at age 22, 11 Jul 1861. Note that this is the same unit and date of enlistment as his brother-in-law Wiley Gilbert Woody. Captured in KY Sep/Nov 1862, confined at Chattanooga, TN. Exchanged on 11 Jan 1863. Captured near Atlanta, GA 22 Jul 1864. Sent to Nashville, TN. Confined at Louisville, KY, 30 Jul 1864. Transferred to Camp Chase, OH, where he arrived on 2 Aug 1864. Died at Camp Chase 8/9 Nov 1864 of typhoid fever. ORGANIZATION: 10, 20 Mar, & 10 Jun 1864 per 'Official Records' (OR); the 29th NC commanded by Lt Col Bacchus S. Proffitt, part of Brig Gen Matthew D. Ector's brigade, part of Major Gen Samuel G. French's division, part of the Dept of AL, MS, and East LA (later Army of MS) commanded by Lt Gen Leonidas Polk. ATLANTA, GA, 3 May - 8 Sep 1864 The 29th NC was commanded by Lt Col B.S. Proffitt, which was part of Brig Gen M.D. Ector's brigade, of Major Gen Samuel G. French's division, of Polk's (or Lt Gen A.P. Stewart's) corps, Army of Mississippi, commanded by Lt Gen Leonidas Polk. DEATH: 'Confederate POW's buried in Northern Cemeteries', by Ingmire and Ericson, Pvt Lewis P. Silver, Co I 29 NC Inf, died 9 Nov 1864, Camp Chase, near Columbus, Ohio, grave #440, row 14, no. 11. In June 2000 the Nallenweg family visited the Camp Chase cemetery in Columbus, IN and photographed Lewis' grave.
